Foundational Story Pedagogy in Israel Education

Reframing Israel Education: When Story Becomes Pathway

In the latest edition of HaYidion: The Prizmah Journal focused on “Israel Education Now,” the article Foundational Story Pedagogy in Israel Education (by Matt Reingold, Ezra Kopelowitz and Benji Davis) proposes a vital reframing of how we teach about Israel.

Rather than transmitting information or promoting a fixed narrative, the authors suggest that educators ground their work in foundational stories—narratives that emerge from Jewish history, texts and collective memory, and that continue to shape contemporary identity. These stories connect the ancient and the modern, allowing learners to approach Israel not only as a place or a topic but as an evolving expression of Jewish peoplehood.

Through this lens, Israel education becomes less about resolving complexity and more about cultivating the capacity to hold it—linking emotion, ethics and belonging to a shared story that continues to unfold. Read the full article here and the full Prizmah Journal here.
